Ayonna, also known as Yonnie, was born in Slidell, Louisiana but raised in the Virgin Islands. She lived in St. John where she took up her earliest years of Childhood education. Yonnie has a southern mother born and raised in North Carolina and her father from the Bronx, New York. As a child of parents that work for the Federal Government she has lived all over the world, which is how she adapts so well to people, culture, and everyday life. Staying under her mother in the kitchen is how she developed all of her cooking skills. Her Caribbean aunt has also taught her a few skills in the baking department in the last two years.
Ever since a child Yonnie has been baking for her family every holiday and just out of enjoyment. She has loved baking since she was 5 years old. Her favorite and one of her most memorable Christmas gifts was her EASY BAKE OVEN! Man, it was every week she would try to bake something to the point her mother KNEW it was time to introduce her to the “real deal”, the oven! Even till this day Yonnie bakes just for the joy and happiness it brings to herself and her clients. Yonnie loves trying new recipes from scratch and creating masterpieces. She bakes for her friends and family all of the time alongside her dinner preparations. It wasn’t until April 2020, Yonnie invited her friends over for Easter dinner where she introduced them to a new rum cake recipe. Once her family and friends tasted it, everyone was in complete “AWE”! Both of her Caribbean friends said this was the best rum cake they ever tasted and encouraged Yonnie to start a business of her own making rum cakes. Her one Caribbean friend told her that her parents order rum cakes every year from an authentic Caribbean shop, but after tasting “Yonnie’s Yummies”, they were sold on her product! It’s the confidence and faith from her family, friends, and clientele that keeps Yonnie going. However, it’s really “All things through Christ that strengthens me” that keeps Yonnie’s Yummies a HIT! “God is who made me, and I thank him every day”, Yonnie preaches daily. I mean what’s better than a Black God-Fearing Women.
All in all, this black owned business has made many appearances in restaurants like “Legacy Carry-out”, military veteran events “VFW”, birthdays, holiday parties, events, and more! It’s always the quality of her rum cakes that speaks for itself. Sometimes all you’re looking for is a good down-to-earth, classic Caribbean Rum Cake to satisfy your sweet tooth, and of course it would be Yonnie’s Yummies!
